SUSTAINABILITY AND CERTIFICATES

What materials do we use?

SURU STUDIOS focusses on high quality basics made under fair working conditions. Here our material list we use in our collection:

-  Our garments are made of 100% organic cotton.

-  For the hat we use merino wool, for the canvas bag organic cotton and for the socks organic cotton/ polyester/ elasthan mix

What is OEKO-TEX 100?

Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® is a globally uniform system of test methods, test criteria and limit values for harmful substances, according to which the OEKO-TEX® test institutes certify the harmlessness of textile products.

What is GOTS?

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a certification of the International Working Group on Organic Textile Standards (IWG) and is one of the strictest standards for organically produced natural fibres (organic cotton, organic virgin wool and organic linen). It defines requirements that ensures a socially responsible and ecologically sustainable production of textiles. From raw material to final processing.

The GOTS certificate is accompanied by social standards throughout the production chain. These standards are based on the criteria of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and include the following areas: minimum wage (living wage, minimum legal minimum wage), prohibition of child labor, prohibition of discrimination in the workplace, health and safety protection in the workplace, and social security through clear regulation of employment contracts. Since version 6.0, GOTS certified companies are obliged to calculate and document the difference between the actual wages paid and the "living wage" according to a given scheme. In addition, the companies are supposed to work towards closing this gap in order to enable textile workers to lead a secure life without financial problems. All these aspects mentioned are checked once a year by an independent certification authority. This ensures that only resource-saving and sustainable materials are used in GOTS certified factories and that the employees work under fair conditions.

What is RWS?

Our Merino-wool comes from non-mulesed sheep and is certified according to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) – an independent, voluntary standard ensuring that wool from certified farms is properly identified and tracked through all processing stages.

The goal of RWS is to protect the sheep that supply the wool and the land on which they graze.

What is mulesing?

"Mulesing" is a torturous method of removing the skin around the tail of sheep - No painkiller is used here. This method is used mainly in Australia and New Zealand to prevent infestation with fly maggots, also called myiasis.

Our caps are made only from mulesing-free wool. I.e. the sheep herds are continuously controlled, better adapted sheep breeds are used and a biological fly control is applied.

What is amfori BSCI?

The amfori Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) is a non-profit organization. It was set up as an initiative of the Foreign Trade Association in response to the debate on how to achieve convergence in the field of corporate social responsibility.

As member of the amfori Business Compliance Initiative (BSCI) we commit ourselves and ask our business partners to respect and implement the code of conduct of the amfori BSCI. It sets a framework of certain nonnegotiable minimum social and ecological standards we ask all of our business partners to commit to. We want human rights and laws on protection of labor, workplace safety and environment to be respected and applied for all parties involved in the manufacturing processes of our goods.

What about our packaging?

Our packaging comes with „zero plastic“ and we use environmentally friendly packaging and equipment for the products.

The polybags are biodegradable and has been created with the ability to slowly break down within a couple of month. They will degrade by naturally occuring microorganismus such as bacteria, fungi and algea.

The shipping packaging, hangtag and package insert consist out of recycled FSC certified paper.

What is FSC?

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world‘s forests.

By using FSC-approved paper, we can be sure that forest health was the first priority and that the materials going into our products were grown and harvested in accordance with the FSC’s strict criteria for biodiversity, worker safety and the rights of local and Indigenous communities.

What about labeling?

Instead of the usual accessories made of plastic, our brand label and care label are made of 100% organic cotton canvas, which is sourced locally from the production countries.

The woven SURU STUDIOS label, which can be found on all products, is made of recycled polyester.

PRODUCTION

Where are our clothes produced?

We manufacture in Dhaka, Bangladesh and are proud of it. We work with long-term local partners. There are countless reasons why we have chosen this country as the production country.

The raw cotton is locally harvested in Bangladesh and spun into yarn there as well. This yarn is then transported to the production facilities, knitted into fabric panels and then dyed. In order to keep the transportation distances as short as possible, accessories such as our maxi canvas bag are made out of 100% organic cotton in China. In contrast to our organic cotton products, our beanies are made out of 100% merino wool from Austria, which gets processed into yarn and dyed in China under fair production conditions.

We guarantee safe and healthy working conditions as well as fair payments for our employees in production and generally throughout the entire value chain.

OUR VALUES

What is important to us?

Social responsibility, such as a transparent and fair supply chain, as well as fair working conditions and fair remuneration of employees are the main focus of SURU STUDIOS.

We want to find solutions with our brand to reduce the ecological footprint and act economically sustainable. We act and produce as sustainably, recyclable and humanitarian as possible.

At SURU STUDIOS we want to support the developing country of Bangladesh. The aim is on the one hand to protect the environment and reduce CO2 emissions and on the other hand to fight poverty and stand up for human rights in Bangladesh.

Therefore we are looking for partners who support and implement social projects in Bangladesh.

Furthermore we do not differentiate between ethnicities, religions, skin color, origin or gender and we advocate equality in society.
